On 23 October, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, welcomed a delegation from BIOPOLIS and CIBIO as part of the SWEB project\u2019s effort to strengthen international collaboration and broaden the research ecosystem that surrounds materials science in Latvia. The programme opened with an introduction at ISSP and continued with a series of in-depth discussions with the Portuguese guests.<\/p>\n

The visit placed particular attention on how modern research institutions can build stronger connections across society by engaging academia, industry, public authorities, and civil society. According to the BIOPOLIS presentation, the Quadruple Helix is a cooperation model that brings these four groups together and links scientific progress with societal needs. The European Commission describes this approach as a way to ensure that innovation serves citizens and helps research institutions operate with greater impact.<\/p>\n

The BIOPOLIS team included Prof. Nuno Ferrand de Almeida, Dr. Jos\u00e9 Pedro Reis, and Dr. Joel M. Alves. Each brought experience in working with diverse communities, coordinating international collaborations, and developing communication strategies that bring science closer to the public. Their examples showed how research organisations can extend their reach by involving schools, local communities, journalists, businesses, and decision makers. Several concrete cases were presented, including the Portuguese initiative The Diary of a Scientist, where artists, journalists, and researchers worked together to communicate scientific discoveries in accessible formats. The project achieved substantial public engagement, as shown in the presentation, with 115 thousand visitors and strong interaction across media platforms.<\/p>\n

During the visit, discussions at ISSP explored how these practices can support the development of Latvian research. The speakers outlined how institutions can strengthen visibility by presenting science through storytelling, targeted communication, and regular engagement with non-academic audiences. They described how the Quadruple Helix approach can be applied in practical terms, for instance, by identifying which societal actors can support research activities and which partners can help extend the institution\u2019s influence, as illustrated in the stakeholder mapping section of the presentation.<\/p>\n

The meeting also touched upon capacity building and proposal development, with an emphasis on how broad partnerships enhance competitiveness in European research programs. Participants examined how strategic thinking, clear missions, and the effective use of institutional \u201clevers\u201d contribute to sustainable impact, drawing on examples from the BIOPOLIS network in Portugal.<\/p>\n

The atmosphere remained open and conversational throughout the day, encouraging active participation and the exchange of ideas. Young researchers were particularly engaged and used the opportunity to ask questions on collaboration models, communication tools, and opportunities for international networking.<\/p>\n

The exchange continued on 24 October with a focused roundtable that brought together the SWEB and FeLow-D teams for deeper discussion on shared scientific directions and upcoming opportunities for collaboration. Over the course of the morning session, participants explored concrete topics of mutual interest for 2026, including preparation strategies for the EIC Pathfinder Open call and possibilities within Horizon Europe related to water quality and environmental monitoring. This dialogue helped identify areas where joint expertise could be combined in future proposals and highlighted several themes where cooperation between the teams could create strong interdisciplinary contributions to upcoming European initiatives.<\/p>\n

The SWEB project places strong value on broad cooperation and the development of skills that extend beyond disciplinary boundaries. This visit supported those goals by providing insights into inclusive research ecosystems and by demonstrating how collaboration across sectors can strengthen scientific excellence.<\/p>\n
