While studying our new photochromic thin films under the transmission electron microscope (TEM), we unexpectedly spotted this heart-shaped feature. In reality, it’s a defect only a few hundred nanometres across – but to us, it’s a nice reminder that even imperfections can be beautiful.
We’re developing a new class of photochromic coatings that can change their optical properties under light, with potential applications in smart windows and energy-efficient buildings.
