The recent event organized by the Institute of Solid State Physics on January 16, 2024, as part of the SWEB project showcased a major step forward in sustainable development and renewable energy within the European Union. By concentrating on incorporating cutting-edge smart window technologies into zero energy buildings, this initiative demonstrated how it aligns with both Sustainable Development Goals and European Clean Energy objectives, while also supporting Latvia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy and the European Research Area.
At the heart of the SWEB initiative is building a strong ERA Chair team to work on long-term sustainability strategies. This involves improving the Thin Films Laboratory and ISSP, promoting scientific excellence, and growing stakeholder connections. There are also plans underway for a Briefing Demo Centre for renewable energy in Latvia as well as an EU joint graduate school focusing on smart windows and zero energy buildings, highlighting the broad influence of the project.
The workshop benefitted greatly from the participation of Nicolas Alonso-Vante, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Poitiers. His expertise in nanoscale materials, catalytic centers, and oxygen reduction reactions offered valuable insights. In particular, his knowledge in materials for photo-electro-catalytic water splitting provided a deeper understanding of the challenges and potential solutions in this field. During his discussion, he emphasized key factors in photo-electro-chemical water separation and proposed the idea of using a YHO-based photochromic material for water separation under visible light, which was inspired by preliminary data at the University of Poitiers.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Juris Purans, leading the SWEB project and Thin Film Laboratory, the event not only added to scientific discussions but also strengthened the project’s dedication to promoting partnerships among researchers, policymakers, and society. This supports the overall aim of creating a sustainable global energy model, with key figures like Nicolas Alonso-Vante playing an important part. The event notably pushed forward the SWEB project’s mission to support EU’s drive towards climate neutrality and sustainable energy solutions.
