Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings (SWEB) project inspires youth with advanced technological insights

Dr. Boris Polyakov, the leader of the Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings project, made a big step towards getting young students interested in STEM fields providng popular-scientific lectures in two schools in Riga – RTU Olaines Tehnology College on 2.05.2024. and Riga Secondary School Nr. 95. on 7.05.2024. As part of the project, Dr. Polyakov gave an engaging talk to senior students, explaining the advanced technology behind smart windows and how they can be applied to increase energy-efficiency of buildings both in Riga and worldwide.

In his talks, Dr. Polyakov dived deep into the tech powering smart windows. He covered materials, coatings, and the science behind these advancements, and explaining how smart windows can revolutionize energy savings and building sustainability – a key focus of the SWEB project. The students gained a thorough understanding of how these smart tech solutions are crucial for the future of zero-energy buildings. A big part of Dr. Polyakov’s talk focused on how the SWEB project went from being an idea in the lab to a real product people can use. He showed the students how the European Union’s support was key in making that happen – turning innovative research into something that’s ready for the market. The students found this part of the presentation really inspiring because it demonstrated the real-world impact of science and the great opportunities the EU provides for young scientists and entrepreneurs who want to turn their ideas into reality.

Wanting to inspire more young women to pursue careers in STEM, Dr. Polyakov dedicated part of his talk to highlighting the vital contributions of female scientists. He shared inspiring stories about successful women in science and the tremendous impact of their work. Dr. Polyakov’s words were a rallying cry to break down gender barriers and motivate a new generation of young women to become scientists and engineers. To wrap up his presentation, Dr. Polyakov warmly invited the students to attend the upcoming “Night of Science” event hosted by the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Latvia. This annual event on 27th of September will feature a ton of fun and exciting activities at the ISSP facility on Ķengaraga str. 8. The Night of Scientists is all about showcasing cutting-edge scientific research and how it’s being turned into real-world solutions, with a special emphasis on the smart windows technology developed by the SWEB team. This event will give the students an inspiring look at the innovative projects and inventions happening at ISSP, underscoring the importance of science in improving our everyday lives.
