Professor Esra Özkan Zayim from Istanbul Technical University Department of Physics Engineering gave a lecture on topic “Chromogenic Materials: A Review of Advances in Organic and Inorganic Systems” on 31st of May. The lecture was part of the Sweb project and covered many important and interesting topics in the field of smart windows.
Abstract of the lecture.
Chromogenic materials, known for their ability to dynamically modify their optical properties in response to external stimuli, offer immense potential in various applications. Of particular interest are ElectroChromic (EC) coatings, which exhibit color changes upon the application of an electric current. These coatings have gained significant attention due to their energy efficiency, comfort-enhancing attributes, and aesthetic appeal. As costs decrease, electrochromic coatings are expected to become more prevalent across sectors ranging from architecture and construction to transportation and consumer products. This talk focuses on tungsten oxide, recognized as a prime candidate for commercial applications, and explores coating techniques such as sputtering, e-beam evaporation, and wet coatings. The presentation includes comprehensive characterizations involving dielectric, optical, and electrochemical analyses of tungsten oxide films. Furthermore, both organic and inorganic chromic devices will be discussed, with a focus on optimizing coating parameters and presenting systematic characterizations.
