We proudly celebrate Dr. Juris Purans, Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings (SWEB) Project Manager, on receiving the Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Purans is one of Latvia’s most distinguished scientists, a habilitated doctor of physics, a Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, a leading researcher at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, and Head of the Thin Film Laboratory. Over decades, he has helped shape entire research directions in Latvia, from synchrotron radiation studies and EXAFS spectroscopy to advanced thin film technologies and smart functional coatings.
His scientific leadership has built internationally recognized research capacity, attracted major national and European projects, and strengthened collaboration between science and industry. Under his guidance, the SWEB team is developing advanced smart window materials and coatings for zero-energy buildings, while also contributing to stronger research excellence, talent development, and innovation transfer in Latvia and across Europe. The project’s own strategy frames this as a contribution to a more integrated and inclusive European Research Area, with a focus on capacity building, mobility, knowledge-sharing, and long-term institutional excellence.
Dr. Purans has also made an exceptional contribution to mentoring young researchers, developing new scientific talent, and connecting Latvian research with leading international institutions. His work stands as a powerful example of how scientific excellence, vision, and persistence can create impact far beyond the laboratory.
Congratulations to Dr. Juris Purans on this well-deserved honour, and thank you for your outstanding contribution to science, innovation, and Europe’s sustainable future.
