New Publication on Photochromic Thin Films

A new scientific article from the Thin Films Laboratory at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia has been published in Surface & Coatings Technology (Elsevier), in a special issue of the International Conference on Thin Films (ICTF 2026).

The research was conducted in collaboration with the University of Tartu (Prof. Hugo Mändar) and the Helsinki Accelerator Laboratory (Prof. Kostas Sarakinos and Dr. Dmitry Moldarev).

The researchers demonstrated substrate-controlled, epitaxial-like growth of photochromic yttrium oxyhydride thin films and identified material composition as the primary factor determining their photochromic response. The results also showed that bleaching kinetics strongly depend on the degree of light-induced darkening.

The research was supported by the SWEB (Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings) project (GA No. 101087367) and the postdoctoral research project of Dr. Martins Zubkins (No. 1.1.1.9/LZP/1/24/011).
